The Shippensburg University women's tennis team resumed its match schedule Friday and began the championship portion of its season with a non-conference victory at D'Youville, 5-2, in indoor action at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville, N.Y.
Shippensburg (4-2) won three of the five contested singles matches, claimed a fourth by forfeit, and notched the doubles point to best D'Youville (2-8).
Sophomore
Rachel Gallagher and senior
Brooklynn Rupert clinched the victory for the Raiders with 6-0, 6-0 victories in singles. Gallagher won at No. 4 singles, while Rupert won at No. 5. Sophomore
Ava Kalist accepted a victory at No. 6.
With the match already in hand, it allowed the teams to support the match at No. 3 singles, which went to a tiebreaker. Freshman
Jade Miller dropped the first set 7-6 (7-5) but rallied to claim the second set 6-1. Miller won the decision by taking the tiebreaker, 10-5.
Junior
Corinne Markovich won four games at No. 1 singles, while
Yasmin De Meyer made her SU tennis debut with competition at No. 2 singles. De Meyer spent the last three seasons as a member of the Raider field hockey team.
SU nabbed the doubles point with a decision at the No. 2 flight; the Saints won the No. 1 flight 6-2 and the Raiders accepted a forfeit win at the No. 3 flight. The team of Markovich and Miller posted a 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
It is SU's second victory of the season over D'Youville; the Raiders defeated the Saints 4-3 back on Sept. 28 at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg remains in upstate New York overnight to face Daemen tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
