SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team swept Chestnut Hill on Wednesday night to claim victory in its home opener at Heiges Field House. Set scores were 25-12, 25-12 and 25-7.
Shippensburg (11-6) recorded 44 kills with a season-high .333 hitting percentage. Ten different Raiders contributed at least one kill. Chestnut Hill (3-10) finished the night with nine kills. The Raiders held Chestnut Hill to a negative hitting percentage of -.114. SU out-blocked the Griffins eight to four and delivered eight aces to the Griffins' four.
The Raider offense was led by Hailey Cappleman who recorded a match-high 14 kills with a .722 hitting percentage. Cappleman committed only one error on 18 swings and added six block assists.
Elise Bragg recorded nine kills with a .400 hitting percentage. Bragg tacked on two aces, a block assist and six digs. Isabelle Bombas added six kills with a .750 hitting percentage and contributed two block assists.
Kearstin Davis and Jaiden Anderson shared the setting duties; Davis dished out 18 assists and Anderson recorded 15. Shay Kolivoski led the SU defense with 13 digs.
The Raiders opened the match with a 4-1 scoring stretch that featured an ace from Bragg. Berkley Simmons delivered an ace and helped SU complete a 5-0 run to increase the lead, 11-4. A block from Cappleman and Davis started a 4-0 run that included an ace from Gracen Nutt, 15-5. A service error from the Griffins put the Raiders at set point, 24-10. Cappleman delivered a kill to close the first set.
SU completed a 7-2 scoring stretch to take an early lead in the second set. A 6-0 run with Riley Blank on the service line increased the Raider lead, 16-4. A kill from Kylie Snyder and a trio of kills from Bragg put the Raiders ahead by 15, 20-5. The Griffins completed a late 4-0 run to try to cut the deficit, 22-11. A block from Cappleman and Clara Wildermuth gave the 2-0 advantage to Shippensburg.
A 4-0 run from the Raiders gave them the early lead in the third set, 7-3. With Nutt on the service line, the Raiders completed a 15-0 run that featured three aces. Kyra Douglass delivered a kill to put SU at match point. Mya Davis recorded her first kill as a Raider to complete the 3-0 sweep. The Raiders hit .478 in the third set, only committing three errors on 23 swings.
The Griffins were led by Micah McKenzie who recorded four kills. Sarah Allen led the Griffin defense with 10 digs.
The Raiders will be back at home on Friday to take on Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East opponent, East Stroudsburg at 6 p.m.
