RECAP: Women’s Soccer falls at No. 20 Bloomsburg, 1-0

Raiders nearly find equalizer late; Brown makes six saves

The Shippensburg University women's soccer team was held off the scoreboard Wednesday night as it dropped a 1-0 decision at No. 20 Bloomsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division clash at Steph Pettit Stadium.

Shippensburg (2-4-3, 1-4-3 PSAC East) fell behind in the 50th minute as Bloomsburg (7-2-2, 4-2-2) capitalized on a giveaway in front of the goal box. Sydney Donovan took advantage and chipped the ball into the top right corner of the frame from close range.

Undaunted, the Raiders worked hard for an equalizer. In the 64th minute, Chloe Chipego sent a ball into the box from the left wing that resulted in a chance at close range. Ashley Hughes fired a shot on goal, but Sam Merklin made the save by punching the ball away for a corner kick.

SU's best and most dangerous chance came with about nine minutes to go. Taylor Steininger sent a through ball to Hughes on the left wing, who evaded a defender and fired a left-footed shot from about 10 yards out that rang off the top of the left post.

The rebound went into the dangerous area on the right of the goal box, where Maegan Quinn attempted to corral the carom and glanced a shot that hit off the outside of the right post before rolling away.

Kirstin Brown, the reigning PSAC Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week, was strong in net. Brown was credited with six saves – three in each half.

The Huskies finished with a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal, while the Raiders had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Shippensburg has a bye on Saturday. It returns to action at 6 p.m. next Wednesday against Shepherd at David See Field.
