The Shippensburg University women's soccer team picked up a road point with a 1-1 draw against Lock Haven Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Hubert Jack Stadium.
Shippensburg (2-3-3, 1-3-3 PSAC East) took the lead in the 12th minute on a goal from forward
Ashley Hughes and maintained the advantage for over 60 minutes of game action before Lock Haven (2-5-2, 0-5-2) found a late equalizer.
Kaitlyn DiCandilo received a push in the back to earn the free kick that led to the opening goal. The Ship rightback took the free kick and delivered an inswinger into the path of Hughes on a near-post run, and the forward beat the Lock Haven goalkeeper with a glancing header for her fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Lock Haven scored the equalizer from a corner kick in the 74th minute. Bald Eagle Aleigha Rieppel played the corner short to an open Olivia Hudson, who curled a perfectly placed shot off the inside of the far post and into the back of the Raider net.
It will go down as a disappointing, but fair result for the Raiders. The two sides played each other evenly over the course of the 90 minutes. Shippensburg outshot the Bald Eagles by a slim 12-to-11 margin, but the hosts had an advantage in shots on target (5-to-3). Lock Haven also had a slight edge in corner kicks (9-to-8).
Raider goalkeeper
Kirstin Brown totaled four saves.
Shippensburg returns to action with a midweek road matchup Wednesday at Bloomsburg at 6 p.m.
