SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's soccer team held on for a 1-0 victory over Kutztown Wednesday to earn its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division win of the season on a sunny afternoon at David See Field, 1-0.
Shippensburg (2-3-2, 1-3-2 PSAC East) ended its three-game scoring drought with a first-half goal from forward
Ashley Hughes and goalkeeper
Kirstin Brown registered nine saves to earn the clean sheet.
Kutztown (5-3, 4-3) outshot Shippensburg 18-to-7, including a 10-to-1 advantage in shots on target. The Raider defense also weathered 10 second-half Golden Bear corner kicks.
Shippensburg's only shot on goal offensively came off a Hughes header in the 24th minute.
Mia Kemp lofted a towering cross into the box from the right wing, and Hughes leapt over her marker to meet it, beating the KU keeper with a hard, low header for SU's first goal in three outings (a 1-1 draw at Shepherd Sept. 10).
The Raider defense made the goal stand up despite heavy Golden Bear pressure.
Brown made a stellar diving save to deny KU's Corinne Morgan on a near-post strike almost immediately following Shippensburg's go-ahead goal.
Brown's quick reactions stopped a screamer of a volley off the right boot of KU's Caroline McDonald in the final two minutes of the opening half. The velocity of McDonald's shot sent the ball pinballing in the box, forcing Brown into a double save and a vital goal line clearance from Kemp – who was credited with a team save.
The SU defense remained rock solid as the Golden Bears sent more numbers forward in the second half, allowing just three shots on target in the second 45 minutes.
Freshman defender
Grace Boritz excelled in what was her first collegiate start Wednesday. Faced with the difficult assignment of marking Morgan and McDonald – a duo that combined for nine goals and six assists in seven games entering play Wednesday – Boritz helped the SU backline pick up its second clean sheet of the season.
The outcome marked SU's first win over Kutztown since 2014 and the program's first regulation victory over KU since 2013. The Raiders had been 0-12-2 over their last fourteen games in the series prior to Wednesday's victory.
Shippensburg next travels to Lock Haven Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff
