RECAP: Volleyball splits Day 2 of Tony Banner Memorial Invite, beats Davis & Elkins, 3-0

SU gets win over D&E after falling in four to Findlay

The Shippensburg University volleyball team split day two of the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament, defeating Davis and Elkins 3-0 to overcome a 3-1 loss earlier in the day to Findlay. 
 
Shippensburg (1-2) finished the day hitting .280 with 97 kills. Senior Kat Negron led the Raiders with 25 kills over the course of two matches. She added seven service aces and 10 digs.
 
Senior Emily Gardner contributed 21 kills with the Raiders with a .459 hitting percentage. Gardner recorded four aces and 16 digs on the day. 
 
Junior Kearstin Davis dished out 73 assists over the course of the two matches and added five kills and 15 digs. Sophomore libero Shay Kolivoski  paced the back court with 25 digs. 

Davis was named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the weekend.
 
Shippensburg returns to action next weekend at the Crimson Hawk Classic, where it will first take on Adelphi at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13. 
 
Findlay 3, Shippensburg 1 (25-27, 25-19, 17-25, 20-25) 
 
SU started out the first set with a 5-0 run to help pull ahead. The Oilers answered with a 4-0 run of their own and led 8-7. The teams continued to go back and forth, with neither team taking a lead of more than three points. The Raiders got a chance to end the set at 25-24, but the Oilers rallied after a kill, a Raider error, and a service ace. Findlay claimed the set with a 27-25 score and held the advantage of 1-0. 
 
Set 2 started in similar fashion as the first. The Raiders took control at the end of the frame after a 4-0 run that consisted of two Oiler errors, a kill from Negron, and a kill from sophomore Natalya Montague. The Raiders kept the momentum in their favor and won Set 2, 25-19. 
 
The Oilers took early control in Set 3 and never looked back as the Raiders were never able to gain the lead. Findlay claimed the set 25-17 and the match advantage at 2-1. 
 
To start the fourth set, Findlay went on a 5-0 scoring run. SU answered with its own 4-0 scoring run in the middle of the match when it tried to cut the deficit and got within two at 15-13. The teams continued to go back and forth; ultimately the Raiders fell to the Oilers 25-20. 
 
Negron paced the Raiders with 15 kills and Gardner added 11 of her own. Junior Isabelle Bombas contributed eight kills on a .462 hitting percentage. 
 
The Oilers collected 62 kills during the match with a hitting percentage of .359. Hannah Miller led Findlay with 18 kills while Emma White contributed 50 assists. 
 
Shippensburg 3, Davis & Elkins 0 (25-17, 25-7, 25-15) 
 
Set 1 started as a back-and-forth matchup between the two teams. The Raiders pulled away in the middle of the set, when they went on an 8-1 scoring stretch, with help from five Gardner kills, and made it 19-10. Davis & Elkins answered with its own 5-0 run, but the Raiders were able to pull away to win Set 1, 25-17. 
 
The second set remained in the Raiders' hands as they held the Senators to seven points during the set. SU went on an early 12-1 scoring stretch that made it 17-4. A kill from freshman Clara Wildermuth ended the set for the Raiders at 25-7. 
 
SU remained dominant in the third and completed a 5-0 scoring run in the middle of the set to make it 18-10. The Raiders closed the third set and the match with a 25-15 win. 
 
Shippensburg recorded 45 kills in the match, with a hitting percentage of .404. Negron and Gardner led the Raiders again with 10 kills apiece. Junior Berkley Simmons added five service aces. Bombas and Wildermuth led the team with three blocks. 
 
The Senators collected 27 kills. Reanne Debose led the effort with eight kills. Keira Robinson added 16 assists for Davis & Elkins.
