SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's tennis team rallied to win the final three singles matches Saturday and conclude a long day with a victory, as the Raiders defeated the visiting Saints of D'Youville, 4-3, in action on a wet day at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (3-1) began its day around 8 a.m. with squeegees, as the team worked throughout the morning to clear the courts from a healthy amount of Friday rainfall that had lasted into the morning. The match, originally scheduled for 11 a.m., started around 2 p.m. It featured a 45-minute delay during doubles due to another brief rain squall that passed through, and ended shortly after 5 p.m.
D'Youville (1-3), in its second year as a full NCAA Division II member, claimed the doubles point by virtue of a 6-0 shutout in the No. 1 flight by the tandem of Mina Randjelovic and Yuliia Kashtelian and a tiebreaker victory (7-6 (7-1)) in the No. 2 flight by the tandem of Maria Campisi and Paola Ermina.
SU's pairing of junior
Corinne Markovich and freshman
Jade Miller battled to the brink at No. 2 doubles but came up just short, while senior
Kendall Winters and sophomore
Ava Kalist won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles, but it wasn't enough to keep the doubles point from the Saints.
Kalist zoomed to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles, but D'Youville staked itself to a 3-1 lead after Randjelovic won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Kashtelian won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
The Raider rally began with Miller winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. SU evened the score at 3-3 after sophomore
Brinley Orris picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Yelizaveta Prokopenk.
The match ended up coming down to No. 4 singles, where sophomore
Rachel Gallagher battled to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ermina to give the Raiders the victory.
Shippensburg has already matched its win total of last season through four contests.
SU travels to Bryn Mawr on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match against the Owls.
