SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team scored its second win over West Chester in as many seasons with a 3-0 triumph over the Golden Rams Wednesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division clash on a wet, foggy evening at David See Field.
Shippensburg (2-3, 1-1 PSAC East) got first-half goals from senior
Ashton Davies and sophomore
Luca Heusser, and a goal late in the second half from sophomore
Cam Henry to seal the victory.
West Chester (4-2-1, 1-1) held the edge in total shots (18-to-9) and corner kicks (10-to-4), and maintained a large possession advantage in the second half, but were outdone by a stellar effort from the SU defense.
Sophomore
Ryan Krumenacker made six saves in the Raider goal, securing his second clean sheet of the season.
Both of Shippensburg's first half tallies were the result of well-worked counterattacks.
In the third minute, junior midfielder
Luke Kramer picked out Davies in the box with perfect pass, and the SU attacker guided his header past the WCU goalkeeper to give the Raiders a quick advantage.
In the 21st minute, Huesser delivered a left-footed strike from just outside the box into the bottom right corner to double the margin. Redshirt-sophomore
Clay Waterman was credited with an assist on Huesser's goal.
The start of the second half was dominated by the Golden Rams as the visitors threw numbers forward, forcing the Raiders into a defensive-minded posture to absorb the pressure.
Shippensburg put the match away with a goal against the run of play in the 83rd minute. Junior
Ethan Paulukow chested down a Ship throw-in into the path of Heusser, who dished a pass off to Henry streaking down the right flank. Henry's effort clanged off the WCU goalie's fingertips and into the back of the net.
The win marks the second victory for the Raiders over the perennial East power Golden Rams in as many seasons, having scored a 2-1 win at West Chester last season. Shippensburg's last win over West Chester prior to 2023 dates back to 2011.
It also marks the Raiders' first shutout against the Golden Rams since the 2010 season (1-0 at WCU), and their first three-goal output against WCU since 2011 (3-1 win).
Up next, the Raiders will host Bloomsburg in a The Hidden Opponent contest Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at David See Field.
