The Shippensburg University women's tennis team could not ascend to the win plateau Tuesday night in falling to Piedmont, 6-1, in evening competition in Florida.

Shippensburg (1-7) once again competed well in facing a quality opponent. Piedmont (11-2), a school from Georgia, went 19-3 last season and reached the NCAA Division III regional championships.

SU's closest matches were in the No. 4 through No. 6 singles flights. The Raiders also won No. 3 doubles, as freshman Rachel Gallagher and senior Brighid Cantwell won by a 6-2 score, but the Lions claimed the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 and a 7-5 win at No. 2.

Cantwell won No. 6 singles for the second straight day, defeating Daisha Thompson by a score of 6-3, 7-5.

Freshman Brinley Orris nearly claimed the first set at No. 5 singles, dropping the first-set tiebreaker 7-3 in a 7-6, 6-1 setback.

Gallagher went three sets at No. 4 singles, overcoming a 6-4 loss in the first set to take the second set 6-3. Her opponent Sarah Row claimed the third-set tiebreaker by a 10-7 margin.

Shippensburg will face SUNY Geneseo at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow in Florida.
