The Shippensburg University volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory over West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup to close the regular season. Set scores were 25-14, 22-25, 25-12, 25-22.
Shippensburg (17-12, 11-3 PSAC East) hit an impressive .328 from the floor, its second-best efficiency of the season, and recorded 47 kills. The Raiders only committed nine attack errors on a total of 116 swings.
West Chester (13-15, 5-9) collected 47 kills while hitting .176 from the floor. SU out-blocked West Chester 7-4. The Raiders matched their season-high by delivering 15 aces.
The SU offense was led by senior
Emily Gardner who recorded 16 kills while hitting .333 from the floor. Gardner added a match-high four aces and seven digs. Sophomore
Natalya Montague was a key piece for the Raiders, hitting .714 from the floor and collecting 10 kills on 14 swings while committing no errors.
Junior
Kearstin Davis dished out 35 assists and tallied seven digs, an ace and a kill. Junior
Berkley Simmons led the defense with 12 digs and delivered two aces. Sophomore libero
Shay Kolivoski collected eight digs and added three aces.
SU took an early lead after a 5-0 run that featured an ace from Gardner. Kills by junior
Kayla Johnson and Montague and an ace from Kolivoski increased the lead, 8-4. An 8-2 scoring stretch that included a pair of kills and an ace from Gardner put the Raiders ahead by nine, 20-11. The Raiders arrived at set point after a kill from Montague and closed set one off a Golden Ram error, 25-14.
West Chester recorded the first four points of set two. A kill from Gardner and a pair of kills from senior
Maddie Clabaugh, cut the deficit to one, 4-3. A 6-1 scoring stretch that featured a pair of kills from Montague and an ace from senior
Kat Negron gave the Raiders the lead, 13-10. A 3-1 scoring stretch from the Golden Rams tied the set, 14-14. Two attack errors from West Chester and a kill from Gardner gave the lead to SU, 20-17. A 7-0 run put West Chester at set point, 24-20. The Raiders came within two but were unable to cut the deficit, 25-22.
Davis notched an early ace to start set three. A 6-2 scoring stretch kept the lead in favor of the Raiders, 7-3. A 4-0 that featured a pair of kills from Gardner increased the lead, 13-5. A kill from Clabaugh sparked a 7-1 scoring stretch, 23-11. A kill from Johnson and an ace from Simmons closed set three in favor of the Raiders, 25-12.
The Golden Rams opened set four with a 5-1 scoring stretch to take the early lead. A 7-0 run that featured back-to-back service aces from Negron gave SU the lead, 9-8. Kills from Gardner and Clabaugh increased the lead, 13-10. West Chester answered with a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to two. Johnson delivered a pair of kills to keep SU in front, 18-15. A kill from Clabaugh put the Raiders at match point. West Chester survived once but the Raiders closed the match off a West Chester error, 25-22.
Shippensburg, the PSAC Eastern Division No. 2 seed, will host East No. 3 seed East Stroudsburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a PSAC Quarterfinal at Heiges Field House.
