RECAP: Volleyball swept Tuesday at Pitt-Johnstown

Bombas leads with six kills, hitting .600 from the floor

The Shippensburg University volleyball team was swept at Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 29-27, 25-20 and 25-13.
 
Shippensburg (12-11) ended the match with 28 kills, hitting just .047 from the floor. Pitt-Johnstown (16-6) finished the match with 45 kills with a .279 hitting percentage. The Raiders delivered seven aces to the Mountain Cats five. SU was out blocked 7-2.
 
Junior Isabelle Bombas led the SU offense with six kills, hitting .600 from the floor. Bombas committed zero errors on 10 swings.
 
Junior Kearstin Davis dished out 24 assists and tallied 10 digs, a kill and two service aces. Sophomore Shay Kolivoski led the Raiders from the service line with four aces and added 11 digs.
 
The Raiders took an early lead in the first set with a 6-0 run that featured three aces from Kolivoski, 10-4. The Mountain Cats cut the deficit to two with a 5-0 run, 11-9. A Pitt-Johnstown error started a 3-0 run that included an ace from Davis to help the Raiders keep the lead, 16-13. A 5-0 run gave the Mountain Cats the advantage, 18-16. Kills from senior Emily Gardner and Bombas tied the set, 18-18. The Raiders pulled ahead with a 4-1 scoring stretch that featured a pair of kills from freshman Clara Wildermuth, 22-20. The Mountain Cats responded with a 2-0 run to tie the set, 22-22. UPJ was the first to arrive to set point at 25-24, but Bombas delivered a kill to tie the set at 25-25. The raiders fended off another set point before they arrived at a set point of their own, 27-26. UPJ answered with a 3-0 run to claim set one, 29-27.
 
Davis opened set two with a service ace, but an 8-0 run for the Mountain Cats gave them the lead, 14-7. A kill from Gardner and a UPJ error cut the deficit to five, 14-9. Sophomore Hailey Cappleman notched a kill that sparked a 3-0 run for the Raiders to cut the Mountain Cat lead to two, 20-18. After a 4-0 run, Pitt-Johnstown arrived at set point 24-18. The Raiders held off two set points before the Mountain Cats won set two, 25-20.
 
UPJ kept the momentum in set three as they completed a 6-1 scoring stretch, 7-4. Bombas notched a kill to put the Raiders within two, 7-5. An 8-1 scoring stretch increased the UPJ lead, 15-6. The Raiders were unable to cut the deficit as the Mountain Cats claimed the set three and match victory, 25-13.
 
Shippensburg will return home Friday to take on Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Kutztown at 7 p.m. at Heiges Field House.
