RECAP: Volleyball notches four-set win at Jefferson

SU records season-high 15 aces

The Shippensburg University volleyball team took down Jefferson, 3-1, in a road non-conference match at the Gallagher Athletic Center on Tuesday night. Set scores were 23-25, 25-14, 25-12 and 25-14.
 
Shippensburg (9-9) finished the match with 15 service aces, a new season high. The Raiders hit .261 from the floor, recording 54 kills. Jefferson (6-12) finished the match with 33 kills and a .093 hitting percentage. SU out-blocked Jefferson 5-2.
 
The SU offense was led by senior Maddie Clabaugh who slammed a season-high 14 kills; she hit .500 from the floor and committed no attack errors on 28 swings. Clabaugh added five aces, four block assists and five digs. Senior Emily Gardner recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 11 kills and digs on the night.
 
Junior Kearstin Davis handed out 45 assists, tallied four aces, five kills and 10 digs. The Raider defense was led by junior Berkley Simmons who posted 15 digs and a service ace.
 
Jefferson jumped to a 10-6 lead after a 6-2 scoring run. An 8-2 scoring stretch that featured a pair of kills from Gardner and an ace from sophomore Shay Kolivoski put the Raiders in the lead, 13-12. SU increased the lead to three after an ace from Simmons and kills from Gardner and sophomore Hailey Cappleman, 17-14. A 7-1 scoring run helped the Rams regain the lead, 23-21. The Raiders stopped two set points from the Rams, but Jefferson secured a kill to end set one, 25-23.
 
In Set 2, Davis notched a kill to start a 4-1 scoring stretch for the Raiders, 5-3. A kill from sophomore Natalya Montague sparked a 5-0 scoring run for the Raiders that included an ace and a kill from Clabaugh, 9-4. Jefferson came within one after a 4-0 run, 11-10. With senior Kat Negron on the service line, the Raiders completed a 4-0 run, 15-10. Jefferson cut the deficit to two, 16-14. The Raiders closed the set on a 9-0 scoring run that featured an ace from Gardner and a pair of kills from Cappleman, 25-14.
 
The third set was the most efficient set for the Raiders as they hit .321 from the floor and held their opponents to a hitting percentage of zero. An early 4-1 scoring stretch put the Raiders in the lead, 5-2. Clabaugh notched a kill and two aces to increase the Raider lead, 10-3. Gardner had two kills to keep the Raiders ahead, 14-6. Clabaugh recorded her fifth kill of the set followed by four Ram errors, 22-11. Another kill and back-to-back aces from Clabaugh ended the third set, 25-12.
 
In Set 4, sophomore Kylie Snyder smashed a kill to spark an 8-0 run for the Raiders that featured two aces from Davis and a kill from Clabaugh, 8-2. A 3-0 run put the Rams within two, 10-8. A 7-1 scoring stretch that included aces from Gardner and Davis and a pair of kills from Gardner and Clabaugh increased the lead to 22-12. Cappleman and Clabaugh smashed kills to put SU at set point, 24-14. An error from Jefferson gave final point to the Raiders and closed the match, 25-14.
 
Shippensburg will travel to Bloomsburg at 6 p.m. on Friday for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match at Nelson Field House.
