Gardner leads with nine kills; Negron delivers five aces

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. –
The Shippensburg University volleyball team swept West Chester on Saturday afternoon to earn its fourth straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division victory. Set scores were 25-22, 25-10, 29-27.

Shippensburg (8-9, 4-1 PSAC East) finished the match hitting .177 from the floor, collecting 37 kills. West Chester (8-9, 1-4) recorded 35 kills with a .107 hitting percentage. The visitors out-blocked the Raiders 6-4. SU was excellent from the service line delivering 13 aces to West Chester's four. 

The SU offense was led by senior Emily Gardner who posted nine kills while hitting .219 from the floor and added 12 digs. Gardner matched her career high delivering five aces from the service line. 

Junior Isabelle Bombas finished the match hitting .438 from the floor, collecting eight kills on only one attack error. Bombas added two block assists. 

Senior Kat Negron matched her season-high with five aces. 

Junior Kearstin Davis dished out 30 assists while adding a service ace, two kills and five digs. The defense was led by sophomore libero Shay Kolivoski with 13 digs and an ace. 

Bombas notched a pair of kills and Gardner delivered an ace to tie the first set at 4-4. Behind an ace from Negron, a pair of kills from Gardner and a Bombas kill, the Raiders took the lead, 15-11. Gardner's second ace of the set and a kill from Bombas increased the Raiders lead, 18-13. The Golden Rams came within one at 21-20. A 3-0 run that featured a Negron ace and two errors from West Chester put SU at set point, 24-20. West Chester scored two more before Gardner closed set one with a kill, 25-22. 

The second set was Shippensburg's most efficient set, hitting .375 from the floor, collecting 11 kills on only two errors. Back-to-back blocks from freshman Clara Wildermuth, Bombas and Gardner gave the Raiders an early lead, 3-0. A pair of kills from sophomore Natalya Montague sparked a 6-0 scoring run that included an ace from junior Berkley Simmons, 13-5. Behind two aces from Negron and kills from Montague and Bombas, SU gained a 10-point lead, 17-7. The Raiders closed the set off a 4-1 scoring stretch that featured two Gardner aces and a kill from freshman Kyra Douglass. 

A Gardner ace and kills from senior Maddie Clabaugh and Davis were part of a 6-0 run that put the Raiders ahead, 7-1. Sophomore Hailey Cappleman notched a kill to propel a 3-0 run, 10-2. The Golden Rams recorded a 5-0 run to tie the set, 13-13. SU regained the lead after a 3-0 run, 16-13. An 8-2 scoring run put SU ahead by four, 22-18. The Golden Rams registered two kills to tie the set, 23-23. The Raiders arrived at set points three different times before being able to close the set, 29-27. 

Shippensburg will travel to Jefferson at 6 p.m. on Tuesday for a non-conference match at Gallagher Center.
