RECAP: Softball fights back and splits with Lock Haven

Marsteller hits two bombs and 5 RBIs, Lindsay goes 5-for-8 and 2 RBIs

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Shippensburg University softball team split with Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in a tale of two games at Robb Field. The Raiders fell in Game 1, 8-7 in 9-innings, before capturing Game 2, 8-1.

Shippensburg (20-15, 14-10 PSAC East) outhit Lock Haven (20-20, 10-14) in the doubleheader 27-17 and fought back in Game 1 to tie the game 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh inning. In Game 2, SU came out swinging and used an early lead to keep momentum going to take the victory.

Nine of the 10 different starting Raiders had at least one hit, including five hits each from junior Morgan Lindsay and freshman Kaira Zamadics. Lindsay added two RBIs, a walk and a late home run in the bottom of the sixth in Game 2. Zamadics added three RBIs, including a two-run double in Game 1 in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the gap to 7-6.

Graduate Hannah Marsteller kept slugging, reaching base five times, including a two-run home run in Game 1 and then a three-run home run in Game 2. Marsteller added five RBIs, drew two walks and had a slugging percentage of 1.286.

Junior Taylor Myers, junior Alyssa Nehlen and freshman Caitlyn Martell all had three hits. Nehlen added an RBI double in Game 2 that placed the Raiders in the lead, while Martell had a sacrifice fly RBI in Game 2 and also had a double and a triple. Sophomore Ally Weaver had two hits, including the RBI single in Game 1 to tie the game.

The starting pitcher for Game 2, senior Emma Flattery (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) had another win in the circle for the Raiders as she threw a complete game and also threw 1.2 innings in Game 1. Flattery allowed only one earned run and seven hits, while striking out five Bald Eagles. Zamadics threw 0.1 innings before Maelynn Leber came in as a reliever and threw 8.0 innings and struck out four.

Shippensburg will host Millersville on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Raiders will also celebrate their five seniors on Saturday.

Game 1: Lock Haven 8, Shippensburg 7 (nine innings)

Lock Haven struck first with back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning, a two-run home run from Summer Peters and a solo home run from Hayley Lestician had the Bald Eagles lead 3-0. LHU extended its lead in the top of the third inning with an RBI single through the right side.

Shippensburg came back in the bottom of the third with a two-run bomb from Marsteller to narrow the gap, 4-2. However, the Bald Eagles came right back in the top of the fourth with an RBI walk from Peters and scored two more runs off a Raider error to take a 7-2 lead.

SU did not go down easily, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth off an error by Lock Haven and an RBI single by Lindsay to trail 7-4. In the bottom of the seventh, the Raiders had two runners on base after a single by Lindsay and an error by LHU to have Nehlen on base. With one out, Zamadics ripped the ball through the gap for a two-run double and closed the deficit, 7-6. Weaver came in as a pinch hitter and singled up the middle and tied the game, 7-7.

In extra innings, SU had the top of the lineup in the bottom of the eighth but was unable to find a run. LHU took advantage in the top of the ninth and had the game-winning run on second base. An RBI single by Riley McClellan to third base, gave the Bald Eagles the 8-7 lead. SU was unable to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth with two runners on base.

Game 2: Shippensburg 8, Lock Haven 1

Game 2 was a completely different game, SU took charge in the bottom of the first, with two outs, Masteller and Lindsay hit back-to-back singles to bring up Nehlen who ripped an RBI double to left center to bring home Marsteller. Zamadics hit an RBI single through the right side and extended the lead, 2-0. Martell brought home Sullivan who singled up the middle in the bottom of the second off a sacrifice fly.

Flattery only allowed three hits through the five innings and did not let a run score until the top of the sixth as the Bald Eagles threatened with a triple by Bella Schmitt, followed by an RBI single by Peters. Flattery then had back-to-back strikeouts, followed by a pop up to second base on the first pitch.

Shippensburg added five runs in the bottom of the sixth with singles from Myers and Martell, followed by a three-run home run from PSAC home run leader, Marsteller. Lindsay then hit a solo home run to extend the lead 7-1. SU scored one more run off an error by LHU's pitcher.
