STROUDSBURG, Pa. — The Shippensburg University softball team battled until the end Sunday but fell short to East Stroudsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division at Creekview Park.
Shippensburg (19-14, 13-9 PSAC East) had 14 hits and was led by junior
Alyssa Nehlen with three hits and an RBI. Junior
Taylor Myers also had three hits and one run, while fellow junior
Morgan Lindsay had two hits, including a double and an RBI.
Sophomore
Katelyn Minney had two hits and an RBI. Freshman
Caitlyn Martell and graduate
Hannah Marsteller each had two hits, including a double.
Shippensburg will be home all week, starting with a PSAC doubleheader against Lock Haven on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Game 1: East Stroudsburg 3, Shippensburg 1
East Stroudsburg (28-12, 16-6) took an early chance in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead. With two outs, ESU hit a double and a single to bring home three runs.
Shippensburg was held to one hit until the sixth inning when Marsteller doubled to left center to have a runner in scoring position. Minney hit an RBI single to shortstop and brought Marsteller home to reduce the deficit to two runs.
Sophomore
Alicia Ball started in the circle and threw 1.2 innings and had a strikeout. Senior
Emma Flattery entered in relief and threw 4.1 innings and struck out two.
Game 2: East Stroudsburg 3, Shippensburg 2 (10-innings)
The Raiders struck first with a single from Myers and a walk from Martell to have two runners on base. Lindsay hit a deep ball to right field for an RBI single and then an RBI single by Nehlen for a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
ESU answered back with a run in the bottom of the first. Both teams were unable to score any runs until the bottom of the seventh when the Warriors tied the game, 2-2. ESU ended up walking the game off in the bottom of the tenth.
Freshman
Kaira Zamadics started in the circle in Game 2 and threw 6.2 innings and had three strikeouts. Flattery came in as reliever in the bottom of the seventh and threw 0.2 innings and had a strikeout but was replaced by junior
Maelynn Leber who threw 1.2 innings and had three strikeouts.
