SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Shippensburg University softball team could not complete a late comeback in Game 2 against Frostburg State on Wednesday afternoon but had to settle for a split with the Bobcats. SU won Game 1, 13-10, and FSU won Game 2, 7-3 on a sunny but windy day at Robb Field.

Shippensburg (7-5) and Frostburg State (11-4) combined for 46 hits, with SU having 24 of those hits. All nine Raider starters had at least one hit in the doubleheader including five hits from junior
Alyssa Nehlen. Nehlen was 3-for-4 in Game 1, which tied her career high in hits, and added four RBIs.

Freshman Caitlin Martell was perfect in Game 1, going 4-for-4 and adding an RBI. Graduate
Hannah Marsteller was 3-for-5, including two doubles, one RBI and had two walks. Junior
Maelynn Leber was the starting designated player and went 3-for-7 and added three RBIs.

Morgan Lindsay had back-to-back home runs in Game 1, including a three-run home run in her first at-bat and then a two-run home run in her second at-bat. Freshman

Taylor Myers had two hits each.

The Game 1 winning pitcher was senior
Hanna Phillips, who threw 1.1 innings and only allowed three hits. Phillips, competing for the first time in three season due to injury, got her first win since April 13, 2021 against Pitt-Johnstown. Redshirt-Senior
Maddie Uschock got the save and threw 3.0 innings and only allowed two hits and struck out two batters.

Shippensburg will be on the road at Lock Haven on Tuesday at 1 p.m. for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader. Â

Game 1: Shippensburg 13, Frostburg 10

The Raiders came out swinging in the first inning, Minney singled up the middle and Marsteller walked to have two runners on base. Lindsay ripped a deep home run into left field for a 3-0 lead. SU kept the momentum going with three consecutive singles from Martell, Nehlen and Sullivan. Leber brought home one run off a fielder's choice, while sophomore
Ally Weaver brought home one run off a single through left side.

Frostburg answered in the top of the second with three runs to keep the deficit to two. Lindsay again rips another home run to the same spot to extend the lead to 7-3. With two runners on base, Leber singled through the left side for a two-RBI single.

The Bobcats not giving up, tied the game in the top of the third, with two outs. A pair of singles and a double to left field, got FSU tied 9-9 heading to the bottom of the third. Shippensburg extended their lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of doubles off Marsteller and Nehlen  and a single from Sullivan, to give SU a 13-9 lead. A lone home run in the top of the fourth by the Bobcats reduced the deficit to three runs.

Uschock was key down the stretch, stranding two runners on base in the sixth and going 1-2-3 out in the seventh to end the game.

Game 2: Frostburg 7, Shippensburg 3

Frostburg took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. By the top of the fourth, the Bobcats extended their lead to 3-0 after a double and a sacrifice fly. SU answered in the bottom of the fourth by loading the bases, and Nehlen driving a deep double to left center for two RBIs.

FSU answered back in the top of the fifth with a double and a single to take a 5-2 lead. SU scored one run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Nehlen. The Bobcats extended their lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run and took the victory as the Raiders were unable to answer in the bottom as Frostburg's pitcher, Jamie Roberts, stranded one runner on base.

Emma Flattery started in the circle for the Raiders and threw 3.2 innings and struck out five, while Leber threw 0.2 innings and allowed two hits. Freshman
Kaira Zamadics also came in to pitch and threw 1.2 innings and had one strikeout.
