Gallery: (3-21-2023) Softball at Lock Haven (G1 & G2)
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- The Shippensburg University softball team's hard hitting helped the Raiders sweep Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Lawrence Field. SU won Game 1, 5-4, and Game 2, 6-4.Â
Shippensburg (9-6, 3-1 PSAC E) outhit Lock Haven (9-7, 0-2) 24 to 15 and only committed one error the whole day. Freshman Caitlin Martell led the Raiders in total hits, going 5-for-7, including two doubles in Game 2. Graduate
Hannah Marsteller led the team in RBIs with five, including a two-run home run in Game 1 and two doubles in Game 2.Â
Nine out of the 10 Raider starters had at least one hit, including three hits from sophomore
Katelyn Minney – who had two doubles in Game 1. Juniors
Alyssa Nehlen,
Taylor Myers and
Morgan Lindsay had three hits each. Myers added two RBIs.
Shippensburg's winning pitcher for Game 1 was senior
Emma Flattery who came in early in the top of the first and threw a near complete game and allowed only two hits and had three strikeouts. In Game 2, redshirt-senior
Maddie Uschock threw 5.0 innings and got the win. She allowed only two runs and had five strikeouts, which is a season high. Junior
Maelynn Leber came in as a relief pitcher and got the save after throwing 2.0 innings and allowing two hits and had one strikeout.Â
Shippensburg will be back at Robb Field on Friday as it hosts Bloomsburg at 2 p.m.
Game 1: Shippensburg 5, Lock Haven 4
Shippensburg struck first in the top of the first with a single up the middle from Martell, followed by a two-run home run to left center by Marsteller. The Raiders kept the hitting going as Lindsay singled to right field while Minney doubled to left center. With two outs, Leber brought Lindsay home after an error by Lock Haven to give the Raiders a 3-0 cushion heading to the bottom of the first.Â
Lock Haven answered back in the bottom of the first with two runs. SU struggled to find its pitch early and brought in relief pitcher Flattery. With the bases loaded and no outs, the Raiders only gave up two runs off sacrifice flies.Â
SU added one run in the top of the third off a fielder's choice and Minney beat the throw at home to extend the Raiders lead, 4-2. LHU answered back with one run off a double to right field.Â
The Raiders again answered with a single by Sullivan up the middle that brought home Minney who reached base on a double to left center. The Bald Eagles answered again in the bottom of the fifth with a base hit.Â
Game 2: Shippensburg 6, Lock Haven 4
Lock Haven got on the board first after a single down the left-field line to take a 1-0 lead. Shippensburg tied the game in the top of the third with a double from Marsteller down the left-field line that brought Martell home, who reached base on a double to right center. With the bases loaded, Myers singled to left center to bring home Marsteller.Â
The Raiders struck again in the fourth inning as Marsteller doubled to left center to bring home Minney, who had drawn a walk, and Martell, who had singled through the right side. Myers' speed came in clutch as she beat out a throw for a single that brought home Marsteller for a 5-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Marsteller scored on a wild pitch to help extend the Raiders lead to 6-1. Lock Haven came back in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run and a two-run home run to keep the game close and only trail 6-4.Â
Shippensburg took the victory after getting back-to-back groundouts and a fly out to center field in the bottom of the seventh.Â
