RECAP: Softball wraps up South Carolina trip with a 5-2 win over Coker

Flattery allowed two hits, Marsteller hit a two-run home run

The Shippensburg University softball team concluded its weekend in Hartsville, S.C. with a 5-2 win over Coker on Saturday afternoon at Saleeby-Stokes Field.

Shippensburg (3-4) totaled nine hits and no errors. Graduate Hannah Marsteller was 3-for-4 including a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. Senior Emma Flattery (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) came in as a relief pitcher in the third inning, and finished the game allowing only two hits and a walk to earn her second victory of the season.

The Raiders held a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after a Coker (12-5) error in an at-bat by unior Taylor Myers. The error brought home junior Alyssa Nehlen (Pulaski, Pa./West Middlesex), who got on base with a single, and junior Morgan Lindsay, who got on base with a double to left center.

The Cobras answered back in the bottom of the second with a triple and a single to right field. Redshirt-senior Maddie Uschock was the starting pitcher for the Raiders and was able to strand two runners on base. Uschock ended the afternoon throwing 2.0 innings and recording a strikeout.

In the bottom of the fifth, SU had two runners on base after a single by Marsteller and a hit by pitch to Lindsay. Nehlen came up and delivered an RBI single to right field to bring Marsteller home.

The top of the seventh secured the win for the Raiders with a double from sophomore Katelyn Minney followed by a two-run home run to left field by Marsteller. It put the Raiders ahead by three runs, and the Cobras were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh.

Lindsay ended the afternoon going 2-for-3 with two doubles, and Nehlen was 2-for-4. Freshman Caitlin Martell has now reached base in seven straight games.

The Raiders were unable to play Adelphi earlier this morning due to inclement weather.

Shippensburg will now be home for two weeks straight, as they host IUP on Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader and a Sunday doubleheader at 11 a.m. against Pace.
