RECAP: Volleyball rallies to defeat Lock Haven in four sets

Clabaugh paces with 12 kills, 17 digs, four aces

The Shippensburg University volleyball team defeated Lock Haven in four sets Friday night at Thomas Fieldhouse. 
 
Shippensburg (19-8, 10-1 PSAC East) was paced by junior Maddie Clabaugh, whose all-around effort included match-high 12 kills and a .385 hitting percentage. Clabaugh also recorded a team-high 17 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, She also served a team-high four of SU's 13 aces and contributed three blocks.
 
Sophomore Kearstin Davis handed out 34 assists, tallied 14 digs, and snuck in four kills without an error. Freshman Gracen Nutt was one kill shy of a double-double and had 13 digs.
 
Senior Kaitlyn Townsend ripped six kills, including the final two of the match and had four blocks. Junior Emily Gardner had seven kills, swung .158 and had 12 digs. Freshman Shay Kolivoski returned to action and served three aces and had five digs.
 
In a straightforward and efficient first set, the Raiders hit .440 from the floor with 13 kills and just two attack errors. SU got out in front early thanks to a couple of aces between Davis and Kolivoski, taking an 11-6 lead. Lock Haven (10-10, 4-7) came back within two points once, at 14-12, but Shippensburg was able to pull away and capitalize on three LHU attack errors to close the set, 25-17. 
 
The Raiders had just a .030 hitting percentage in the second set, and LHU took advantage with a 25-27 win to even the match. The set went back and forth, featuring 14 ties as the Bald Eagles eventually earned the final three points of the set after being down 25-24.  
 
Shippensburg was back on track in the third set with a big 25-15 frame to take back the advantage. The Raiders posted a .118 hitting percentage while LHU posted a .054 hitting percentage. SU held a 6-4 lead before a four-point run gave the Raiders some cushion. A few points later, the Raiders hit a 7-0 run, including a six-point service run by sophomore Berkley Simmons, to take a big 17-7 lead. SU comfortably closed out the set, holding onto its 10-point lead. The Raiders finished with no service errors in the set and earned three service aces and three blocks.  
 
Looking to close things out, Shippensburg took its momentum into the fourth set with an early 7-3 advantage. LHU came storming back with a big 7-0 scoring run to claim a 10-7 lead. The Bald Eagles took a 14-9 lead before the Raiders began their comeback. SU chipped away at the lead until an attacking error and kills by Clabaugh and Nutt tied the score at 18-18.  
 
Down by a point at 19-18, consecutive kills by Garner and an attacking error gave the Raiders a 21-19 lead. The Bald Eagles tied the match at 21-21 before the Raiders took the final four points to win the match. A kill by Gardner, an ace by Simmons and back-to-back kills by Townsend closed the match. 
 
SU returns to action Saturday at Bloomsburg at 12 p.m.
