RECAP: Men’s Soccer drops match at Millersville, 3–1

Vottero scores his first of the season

The Shippensburg University men's soccer team lost an action-packed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) clash to Millersville, 3–1, at Pucillo Field on Wednesday night.

Shippensburg (4–5–2, 1–5–1 PSAC East) got on the scoresheet first in the 22nd minute, but Millersville (7–2–3, 4–1–2) scored three unanswered goals to take all three points in the match.

It was a first half full of entertainment from both sides. Shippensburg took an early lead through junior Victor Vottero before Millersville scored twice in three minutes to take a 2–1 advantage heading into halftime.

Vottero converted from the penalty spot to put the Raiders in front 1–0. Senior Dalton Shifflett found space in the midfield, sending Vottero through on goal. Vottero collided with the goalkeeper to draw the penalty, then converted his attempt into the bottom left corner.

Millersville did not take a shot until the 28th minute but found a lot of attacking momentum after Vottero's goal. The Marauders leveled in the 34th minute as Haven Thomas scored from distance. The Raider defense intervened on an initial cross, but the ball trickled right to Thomas waiting outside of the box who hit his attempt off of the upright and into the back of the net.

Bob Hennessey gave the Marauders the lead just three minutes later in the 37th minute. From a similar range as Thomas, Hennessey received a pass near the top of the box in space and quickly buried his effort into the left side-netting.

Senior Cody Willoughby made two important saves just before the half to keep it a one-goal affair. Hennessey looked to repeat his great goal with another shot from distance that Willoughby went full extension to save. Millersville jumped on the rebound, but the Raider defense forced a weak shot for an easy save.

Millersville got a big goal to start the second half, taking a 3–1 advantage just four minutes into play. Richy Valverde jumped onto a cross, playing an extra pass to Connor Fiadino who was waiting at the far post with an empty goal in front of him.

Aaron Maynard looked to make it a fourth goal for Millersville, getting on the end of a free kick. His header was goalward-bound until senior Avery Warrick jumped up to head the ball off the goal line. Warrick has had a goal-line clearance in three of the previous four matches.

The Marauders played a solid second half defensively, not allowing any shot from the Raiders in the half.

Willoughby added two more saves in the half, finishing with six in the match. Vottero's goal was the third of his career and his first goal of the season for the Raiders.

After three consecutive road matches, SU is back on home turf at David See Field next Wednesday with a 4 p.m. kickoff against West Chester.
