ORLANDO – The Shippensburg University women's tennis team collected the team doubles point on Tuesday heading into its singles matches with Sioux Falls, but the Raiders ended up falling short to the Cougars by a score of 5-2 at the USTA National Campus. Â

Shippensburg (0-5) earned its doubles point by winning No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The freshmen pairing of
Kendall Winters and
Brooklynn Rupert gave the Raiders the first win, 6-3, in the No. 3 flight. The No. 1 doubles pair of junior
Sahar Islam and sophomore
Merel Hoekstra dropped a close match, 7-5.

It came down to No. 2 doubles, where seniors
Jenna Sluymer and
Jazmin Petrantonio were down 5-4 but fought their way back to claim a 7-5 win.

At No. 6 singles, senior
Kayla Tryanski was triumphant in straight sets. After a dominant first set that she won 6-0, the wind started to pick up in the second but she kept her footing and won 6-4 to claim the victory.

At No. 5 singles, Rupert won the first set 6-3 and had a 4-3 lead in the second set, but ultimately dropped the set 6-4 to go to a third set. In the tiebreak, Rupert trailed 8-4 but rallied within a point at 9-8 before falling 10-8.

Every Raider singles player won at least three games in their respective matches, including Islam winning five games in her first-ever match at No. 1 singles and sophomore
Brighid Cantwell winning six games in a 6-3, 6-3 loss at No. 2 singles. Winters won four games at No. 3 singles and senior
Cally Papoutsis won three games at No. 4 singles.

The Raiders will be back in action tomorrow with two matches: 3 p.m. against Saginaw Valley and 7 p.m. against Cornerstone at the Fort Gatlin Tennis Center.
