SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Noah Nabholz and sophomore
Jackson LoBianco combined for a shutout on Monday as the Shippensburg University baseball team picked up its first divisional victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Bloomsburg on a sunny and breezy afternoon at Fairchild Field.
Â
Shippensburg (6-14, 1-2 PSAC East) and Bloomsburg (9-5, 2-1) each hit seven singles in the game; there were no extra-base hits to be had on this Monday. Due to the schedule change of the game being played at Fairchild Field, the Huskies served as the home team and hit in the bottom half of each inning.
Â
The Raiders scored the only runs in the top of the sixth when junior
Justin Darden hit a ball with enough English on it to hop past the glove of first basemen Brandon Ernst, allowing two runners to score. The run-scoring play was prefaced by a one-out walk by senior
Ben Werkheiser and a single by graduate
Matt Shilling. Werkheiser moved to third on Shilling's single; Shilling stole second on the first pitch of Darden's at bat.
Â
Nabholz had the longest outing of his career, pitching into the seventh. In 6.1 innings, he allowed five hits and walked three while matching a career high with seven strikeouts. He induced a 5-3 double play in the second in which Darden tagged third base and threw over to first to retire the side. He also struck out Ernst with runners on the corners for the final out in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Lobianco entered in the seventh with two runners on and one out. He allowed a walk on six pitches to load the bases but responded by striking out Husky leadoff hitter Carter Chasanov on three pitches and then getting a flyout to end the inning. He scattered a single in each of the last two innings en route to his first collegiate save. Lobianco struck out a career-high four hitters; he had totaled seven career strikeouts over seven career appearances entering Monday.
Â
Bloomsburg got a solid start from Michael Standen, who struck out six in 5.1 innings. Kolby Barrow and Mason Keene finished up on the mound for the Huskies.
Â
Shippensburg is scheduled to play at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Wilmington (Del.).
