SU bats held in check on rainy Sunday

The Shippensburg University baseball team could not get the offense going on Sunday in a 4-0 loss at No. 20 Catawba from cold and rainy Newman Park.

Shippensburg (0-6) left five runners on base, two in scoring position. Graduate Matt Shilling hit a double in the first inning, and graduate JuJu Cason hit a double in the third inning.

Sophomore Gabe Stotler started for the Raiders and went five innings, allowing one earned run and striking out three. Sophomore Jackson LoBianco came in for relief and pitched the last three inning, giving up one earned run and striking out two.

It was a 1-0 game through six innings. The Indians plated three in the seventh to create the final scoring margin.

Catawba's Ben Gilks pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out six and only allowing five baserunners. He did not walk a batter. Luke Spiva went 4-for-4 with a double in the first inning and hit an RBI-single in the seventh inning and later scored a run.

The Raiders will go back to North Carolina next week when they face Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory.
