Raiders get goals from Sluymer, Albright and Petrantonio

The No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team established a 2-0 first-quarter lead Wednesday at No. 6-ranked East Stroudsburg and ultimately claimed its second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory, posting a 3-1 win over the Warriors at Whitenight Field.

Shippensburg (7-0, 2-0 PSAC) finished with a 11-7 advantage in shots on goals and 13-10 advantage in corners. The Raiders scored after just two minutes of play from a pass from graduate Anna Gruber to senior Jenna Sluymer.

With two minutes remaining in the first quarter, a penalty corner opportunity came up for the Raiders. Graduate Caitlyn Wink sent the ball in to graduate Tori Albright, who scored in the bottom right corner.

East Stroudsburg (7-3, 1-1) came back in the fourth quarter to decrease its deficit to one goal. In the waning moments, senior Jazmin Petrantonio scored in the bottom right corner after a penalty corner taken by senior Maddie Reuther.

Freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Tripodo was credited with five saves in recording the win. Freshman Merel Hoekstra recorded her second defensive save of the season with defense on a penalty corner late in the second quarter.

ESU got seven saves from goalkeeper Amy Supey and a goal on a penalty corner from senior Becca Heffner.

Shippensburg is back in action at 11 a.m. on Saturday when it hosts Mercyhurst for a conference match at Robb Sports Complex. Before the match, the Raiders will honor their 12 senior players in a pre-game ceremony.
