SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's tennis team won 28 games in singles and 13 games in doubles on Thursday and honored lone senior
Hannah Wieller in a pregame ceremony, but the Raiders dropped a 6-1 decision to Bloomsburg in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match on a sunny day at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (0-3, 0-3 PSAC East) and Bloomsburg (1-1, 1-1) opened with a tight battle for the team doubles point. Wieller teamed up with freshman
Merel Hoekstra to win No. 3 doubles, 6-4, while Bloomsburg won No. 2 doubles, 6-2. It was the first collegiate victory for both Wieller and Hoekstra.
The clash at No. 1 doubles needed extra points, as BU's Taylor Capoferri and Giovanna Bonito edged SU's
Skylar Walder and
Jenna Sluymer, 7-5, to give the doubles point to the Huskies.
All six Raiders won multiple games in their singles matches, with Sluymer emerging as a victor at No. 2 singles by a 6-2, 6-3 score over Bonito. It was the first singles victory of the year for the Raiders, and Sluymer's second since joining the team last spring.
Sahar Islam went down to the wire in both sets of her No. 6 singles match, dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Haille Hoeflein. Hoekstra won five games at No. 5 singles, including four in the opening set, while freshman
Brighid Cantwell won four games at No. 3 singles and
Kayla Tryanski won four games at No. 4 singles.
Shippensburg has won a doubles flight in two of the three matches this season, as Walder and Sluymer were victorious at No. 1 doubles in the opener.
The status of Wednesday's scheduled match with Shepherd remains in question. SU will travel to face Lock Haven next Saturday at noon.
