RECAP: Men’s Swimming caps successful weekend with fifth-place finish at F&M invite

Raiders post four more Top 5 individual finishes and advance 10 into finals

The Shippensburg University men's swimming team wrapped up a successful weekend at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational on Sunday with a fifth-place team finish at the Kunkel Aquatic Center.

Shippensburg had all but three of its individual performances satisfy the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard and advanced 10 men into evening finals. In the 1,650-yard freestyle, the day's lone event without a final, freshman David Johnson finished fourth after swimming 16:40.99.

SU's three seniors that took to the pool for the 200-yard breaststroke once again impressed. Senior Andrew Hale, who sits second in school history for the event behind record holder senior Matt Bochanski, improved his personal best with an excellent evening swim of 2:03.71 that resulted in a second-place finish. Hale swam more than three seconds faster in the final from his morning prelim. Bochanski was right behind, taking third in 2:03.96, while senior Vin Salvatore finished 10th with a new personal best of 2:10.33 that also featured a three-second improvement from the morning prelims.

Junior David Bussard was the runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.79 that narrowly missed cracking SU's Top 10 for the event and is just five-tenths of a second off his PR. Fellow junior Michael Hannig qualified for the 'B' final and swam 2:04.15 in the final after swimming 2:03.57 in prelims.

Freshman Zaidian Van Orden paced five Raiders with conference cuts in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a 12th-place time of 47.63 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Nathan VanNatter swam 47.92 seconds for a 15th-place finish.

Junior Elijah Zinn came within two-tenths of a second of his PR with a time of 48.39 seconds, while sophomore Matthew Beard swam 48.58 seconds. Redshirt-sophomore JC Greenwood swam 49.71 seconds.

Graduate Eric Zimmerman paced the Raiders in the 200-yard butterfly, placing 12th out of the 'B' final with a time of 2:01.37. Senior Trevor Woolwine, Hale, VanNatter and Van Orden teamed up for a fourth-place time of 3:07.52 in the meet-concluding 400-yard freestyle relay.

Shippensburg returns to competition after the Thanksgiving break when it heads to Ithaca on December 3-5 for the Bomber Invitational.
