SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team could not overcome an early deficit against visiting Le Moyne on Sunday, dropping a 10-5 non-conference game to Dolphins on a sunny and pleasant afternoon at Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (5-8) scored a run in each of the first three innings but trailed 8-3 through its first three at-bats. The Raiders struck out 13 times on the day and left 10 men on base. Le Moyne (7-4) scored seven of its eight early runs with two outs – including five in the third that proved decisive. Â

Jacob Pollock and junior
Chase Zurawski each had two hits in the game. Pollock was 2-for-5 with three RBIs – he plated two runs on a two-out single up the middle in the ninth and opened the scoring with an RBI-single in the first. Zurawski snuck a run home in the third inning on an RBI-single.

Ben Werkheiser reached base three times; he had a double, walk, and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second. Junior
Scout Knotts had a single and a walk.

Kiernan Higgins got the start but could not escape the early two-out jams unscathed. He struck out three in his three innings of work.

Austen Labarre were strong out of the bullpen. Ryan kept Le Moyne scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. He finished his outing allowing two runs over four innings with four strikeouts. Labarre retired all six men he faced in the final two innings, striking out two.

The Dolphins rode a quality start from Andrew Roden (6 IP, 1 ER, 9 K) and a three-inning save from Joe Vail (3 IP, 2 ER, 4 K). Catcher Drew Fureno had a home run, double and six RBIs for the visitors.

Shippensburg heads to West Virginia next weekend for a four-game series at Charleston, which begins at 3 p.m. Friday.
