The Shippensburg University baseball team cranked out 12 hits in its 2020 season opener on Friday night but could not best Stanislaus State, dropping a 10-6 decision to hosts on a 65-degree day at Warrior Baseball Field in Turlock, California.

Shippensburg (0-1) got hits from eight of its nine men in the lineup, including three from sophomore left fielder
Tony Vavaroutsos and two each from senior shortstop
Jacob Pollock and junior right fielder

Stanislaus State (4-0) had 11 hits and benefited from nine walks and three Raider errors. The Warriors held a 3-1 lead after the opening inning and an 8-2 lead after five. Alexis Paz was 3-for-3 with a home run, sacrifice fly, four RBIs and a walk, while Zach Jones added a three-run home run.

SU opened the scoring in the first with an RBI-single from Vavaroutsos after a leadoff double by senior
Zack Zoller. The Raiders loaded the bases with one out but could not scrape up another run in the inning.

Logan Williamson delivered an RBI-single in the fourth, and the Raiders added four runs in the ninth inning. Vavaroutsos brought a man home on a fielder's choice, while junior catcher
Ben Werkheiser plated two with a double. An error resulted in the final run.

Noah Inch took the loss, scattering four runs (two earned) on six hits with five walks in four innings of work. Junior
Chris Horst gave up four runs (three earned) in 2.2 innings of relief but struck out three. Sophomore
