RECAP: Baseball Slugs its Way Past Queens (N.Y.), 19-14 and 10-0

Werkheiser and Vavaroutsos both hit the ball hard

The Shippensburg University baseball team got off the schneid Saturday by totaling 29 runs and 33 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Queens (N.Y.) College, defeating the Knights by scores of 19-14 and 10-0 in games played at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J.

Shippensburg (2-6) hit .413 as a team with 12 extra-base hits over the course of the two games. Five Raiders had at least four hits on the day, including three that totaled five hits.

SU and Queens (2-2) combined for 33 runs, 34 hits and seven errors in Game 1, which got downright silly in the middle innings. The Raiders trailed 2-1 after three innings before scoring four in the top of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. The Knights countered with three runs in the bottom half to even the score at 5-5.

The fifth inning was something. SU scored seven runs in the top half to take a 12-5 lead, but Queens countered with eight runs in the bottom half to re-gain the lead, 13-12. In the top of the sixth, SU put up six more runs to take an 18-13 lead that would prove insurmountable.

Game 2 featured the first career complete game and shutout for senior pitcher Kyle Lysy, who scattered five singles and a walk pitching in his home state. Lysy struck out a career-high seven batters in the longest outing of his career.

Junior catcher Ben Werkheiser and sophomore outfielder Tony Vavaroutsos were the offensive stars of the day. Werkheiser went 5-for-9 with two homers and nine RBIs – both homers and seven RBIs came in Game 1. Vavaroutsos reached base in seven of his 10 plate appearances, going 4-for-7 with a homer, double, four RBIs, five runs, two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

Junior Logan Williamson hit four doubles and finished with five hits, delivering three RBIs and scoring four runs. Graduate Zack Zoller had five singles, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Junior Scout Knotts was 4-for-6 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Lake Lloyd had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Jacob Pollock and junior Chase Zurawski each tripled and combined for five RBIs.

Senior Jack Jenkens got the win in relief in the opener, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout in two innings of work. Redshirt-sophomore Matt Ryan threw two shutout innings of relief.

Sunday's doubleheader against Queens (N.Y.) has been moved up an hour and will start at 11 a.m. at Diamond Nation.
