The No. 1 Shippensburg University field hockey team used a strong start on Sunday to get past Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.), 3-1, in a non-conference matchup to complete its opening weekend.
Â
Shippensburg (2-0) blitzed Queens (1-1) in the first quarter, posting advantages of 12-1 in shots and 6-0 in penalty corners that led to a pair of goals. The host Royals limited the Raiders to just six shots over the final three quarters, but were still out-shot overall by an 18-12 margin.
Â
SU's goal scorers on the day were sophomore
Jenna Sluymer, junior
Jazmin Petrantonio and senior
Rosalia Cappadora, with Cappadora's goal coming early in the third quarter to give the Raiders some insurance.
Â
Queens goalkeeper Avian Thompson helped keep the Royals close by making nine saves – including six in the first quarter. SU redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Lay was credited with three saves.
Â
Shippensburg returns to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday for its home opener, a non-conference matchup against Millersville.Â
