SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 1 Shippensburg University field hockey team could not find the back of the cage on Wednesday in its 2019 home opener, as visiting No. 4 Millersville posted a 1-0 shutout of the Raiders on a stiflingly hot afternoon from Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (2-1) finished the match with a 13-6 edge in penalty corners, but Millersville (3-0) posted a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. The Marauders had nine of their 10 shots and five of their six corners in the third quarter, a frame in which the Marauders converted off a corner for the match's lone tally.

The Raiders controlled possession in each of the bookend quarters, including s 5-0 edge in shots and a 7-0 edge in penalty corners over the final 15 minutes of play. Marauder goalkeeper Autumn Peters finished with seven saves in achieving her third shutout of the season, making four of her stops in the final quarter.

Megan Lay was strong in the cage for the Raiders, making a career-high eight saves. Lay made seven of her eight saves in the third quarter as she stymied most of the Marauder blitz during the frame.

Wednesday's loss marks the second consecutive year that Shippensburg has lost its home opener. Last season, No. 3 East Stroudsburg handed the No. 1 Raiders a 4-0 setback on Sept. 19, 2018.
