The No. 1 Shippensburg University rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second half on Saturday to force overtime with No. 7 Kutztown, but the Golden Bears ultimately prevailed by a 3-2 score in a non-conference matchup from Andre Reed Stadium.
Â
Shippensburg (2-2) was held scoreless in the first half of play. Kutztown (4-1) took an early lead with goals from Rose Moore and Alyssa Donato, both in the first quarter.
Â
The SU offense came alive in the third quarter from junior
Emily Stauffer. Sophomore
Jody Boyer fed a pass to Stauffer, who waited in front of the empty cage, to score her first goal of the season.
Â
Early in the fourth quarter, a play off a penalty corner resulted in a stroke, which junior
Jazmin Petrantonio converted to make the score 2-2 with 12 minutes remaining.
Â
The Raiders were able to fend off the Kutztown attack in the second half, not allowing a single shot in the third and fourth quarters. Ultimately, the Golden Bears struck first in overtime. KU's Gabby Hess sent an outlet pass to Rachel Dusman, who was able to beat redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Lay in a one-on-one.
Â
Shippensburg totaled 10 shots, six of them on goal, and seven corners, while Kutztown finished with nine shots and four corners. The loss for the Raiders is just their second in its last 10 meetings with the Golden Bears dating back to 2011.
Â
SU is back in action on at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts No. 2 West Chester from Robb Sports Complex.
