RECAP: Men’s Soccer Battles to 2-2 Tie at Shepherd

Horstmann’s late goal in regulation preserves a result for Raiders

The Shippensburg University men's soccer team went to double overtime on Wednesday for the third time in five matches this season, with the Raiders playing to a 2-2 tie against host Shepherd in a rather eventful contest from the Shepherd Soccer Complex.

Shippensburg (1-2-2, 1-1-1 PSAC East) finished with a lopsided 16-0 advantage in corner kicks and a 16-9 edge in shots on goal over Shepherd (2-5-1, 0-1-1), but found itself trailing in the final minute of play. With 40 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore Julian Horstmann scored off an assist from senior Colin Marks that sent the match into overtime.

In overtime, Shippensburg drew five corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes of extra time. The Raiders also played 11-on-10 for the final 12 minutes after a red card was assessed to a Ram player. A golden goal, however, could not be achieved. Horstmann sent a shot off the post with 2:34 remaining in double overtime.

Sophomore Owen Iacobelli opened the scoring in the 30th minute off an assist from junior Corbin Martin, but the Rams countered eight minutes later. The match was 1-1 at halftime, and Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute. Stephen Choque scored the first Ram goal and assisted on the second.

Freshman Jacob Zlotshewer was credited with seven saves for the Raiders, while Billy Wood helped the Rams to a result by making 14 saves.

Shippensburg now has a week between matches, returning to action at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday against East Stroudsburg from David See Field.
