SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team rode the strength of two early goals to dispatch visiting Bloomsburg on Wednesday by a 2-1 score in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener for both teams on a sunny day at David See Field.
Shippensburg (1-1-1, 1-0-0 PSAC East) converted on its only two shots on goal in the match against Bloomsburg (1-3-0, 0-1-0). The visitors only had four themselves; senior
Bradley Brickman made two saves, and freshman
Jacob Zlotshewer added one late in regulation for the Raiders.
A nifty passing play just 2:10 into the match resulted in the second goal of the year for freshman
Seth Crabbe, and not even five minutes later, sophomore
Cory Ferguson finished a far-side run with a bullet into the goal to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.
The advantage would last into the 73rd minute, when a failed clear went directly to the foot of Bryce Evans. The Husky midfielder wasted no time firing the ball into the goal from a distance to bring the visitors within one.
A mostly civil affair escalated into high drama late, as a red card with less than four minutes remaining gave Bloomsburg a penalty kick and a chance to even the score. The resulting penalty rang off the post, and the Raiders neutralized the final remaining chances before the final horn.
Shippensburg is back in action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Millersville from David See Field.
