SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team battled its rival Millersville down to the wire on Saturday afternoon from David See Field, but the Raiders sustained a demoralizing 1-0 loss in double overtime to the Marauders – as a last-ditch entry by the visitors found its way into the SU goal with less than a second remaining.
Shippensburg (1-2-1, 1-1 PSAC East) weathered a first-half blitz from Millersville (3-2-0, 2-0) and put forth several strong scoring chances of its own in the second half and in overtime.
Freshman goalkeeper
Jacob Zlotshewer, making his first collegiate start, was strong in the cage for the Raiders. Zlotshewer and his Marauder counterpart Darien McCauley were credited with seven saves in the match.
Corner kicks were 11-6 in Millersville's favor. Over the final 65 minutes of play, shots were close – the Marauders closed with a 9-7 edge.
All signs pointed to a scoreless draw, but in the waning seconds, a long service from near midfield traveled all the way into the goal box, bounced once, and Jake Gosselin headed it past a leaping Zlotshewer in a bang-bang play.
Shippensburg returns to action Wednesday afternoon at Shepherd.
