RECAP: Baseball Splits Sunday to Take Season Series Over Mansfield

SU wins Game 1, 3-2, but falls to Mountaineers in Game 2, 5-4

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split its Sunday doubleheader with Mansfield, winning Game 1 by a 3-2 score to claim the season series over the Mountaineers. MU won Game 2, 5-4, to cap Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action from Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (18-25, 10-14 PSAC East) served as the road team in Sunday's doubleheader, as inclement weather concerns necessitated Mansfield (5-33, 3-21) to play all four games of the series at Fairchild Field.

The Raiders and Mountaineers were tied 2-2 entering the seventh inning of Game 1. SU complemented a leadoff single with a couple of bunts, ultimately scoring the winning run on a throwing error after the second bunt. The other Raider runs were courtesy of a solo home run by senior Tommy Baggett and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Scout Knotts.

Junior Kyle Lysy relieved redshirt-sophomore Noah Inch in Game 1 and earned the win. Lysy threw 4.1 innings, yielding just one run on three hits, and striking out six without a walk. It is Lysy's first win of the year and the second of his career.

Senior Cole Backenstose started in Game 2; he allowed five runs (three earned) and six hits in 5.1 innings of the nightcap. Backenstose struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Senior Jack Goertzen slugged two solo home runs in Game 2, bringing his single-season career best total up to 12. Junior Zack Zoller hit an RBI-triple and junior Jacob Pollock hit an RBI-single in the game.

Goertzen was 4-for-7 at the plate on the day. Freshman Tony Vavaroutsos reached base four times on the day, hitting a single and double and drawing two walks.

Shippensburg took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning of Game 2 after the second of Goertzen's home runs. In the bottom of the sixth, Mansfield loaded the bases with one out. An error resulted in a pair of runs scoring, allowing the Mountaineer to take the lead. SU went three-up, three-down in the top of the seventh.
