The Shippensburg University baseball team was defeated in both games of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at East Stroudsburg on Friday, falling by scores of 13-8 and 2-1 at Hughes Field.
Â
Shippensburg (18-27, 10-16 PSAC East) scored a run in the first inning of each game, but so did East Stroudsburg (31-15, 17-9). ESU scored seven times in the second inning of Game 1 to take control; the Warriors scored in five of their six times at bat in the opener.
Â
Senior
Tommy Baggett hit home runs in each of his first two at-bats – a solo shot in the first and a two-run shot in the third. Baggett finished Game 1 going 3-for-3 at the plate and scoring four runs. Freshman
Tony Vavaroutsos plated Baggett on a two-run homer in the fifth.
Â
While Game 1 featured 21 runs and 29 hits between the two teams, Game 2 was a pitcher's duel between redshirt-sophomore
Noah Inch and ESU's Cam Voss.
Â
Inch allowed a single and a home run to the first two batters of the game but pitched 5.2 innings otherwise unscathed, yielding three hits and six walks while striking out six. Inch struck out the side in the first after allowing the two runs.
Â
Junior
Kyle Lysy got the final out in the bottom of the sixth, inducing a fly-out to center that stranded three Warriors on base.
Â
Junior
Zack Zoller hit a leadoff home run to start Game 2 off Voss, but the Raiders were otherwise unable to scratch across a run. Voss got the win for ESU, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out seven.
Â
Zoller finished the doubleheader 3-for-8 at the plate with a pair of extra-base hits. Sophomore
Scout Knotts reached base four times with a single, double and two walks. Sophomore
Logan Williamson doubled twice, including a two-run double in Game 1.
Â
Senior
Cole Backenstose got the Game 1 start, while sophomore
Chris Horst pitched two innings in relief.
Â
Between games on Saturday, SU will honor its 2019 seniors: Backenstose, Baggett,
Jack Goertzen,
Michael Hope,
Ty Painter and
Zack Sims.
Â
Sims and Hope received their first collegiate at-bats on Friday, serving as the designated hitters in Games 1 and 2 respectively. The two men are expected on the mound one more time at Fairchild Field on Saturday.
Â
UP NEXT: Saturday, 1 p.m. vs. East Stroudsburg (Senior Day).
