SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team moved into second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Kutztown, defeating the Golden Bears by scores of 4-3 and 4-1 on a sunny and warm afternoon at Robb Field.
Shippensburg (21-17, 6-4 PSAC East) used a four-run fifth inning in Game 1 and a three-run fourth inning in Game 2 to achieve a season series victory over the Golden Bears, taking three of four games. The Raiders produced 15 hits and struck out just six times on the day.
Sophomore
Courtney Coy had four hits, including a double in the fourth inning of Game 1 that set a single-season school record. Coy has 21 doubles this season, surpassing the previous record of Sarah Costa (19 in 2004).
Junior
Kayla Bonawitz had a big day as well, going 3-for-6 with three stolen bases, an RBI and two runs scored. Freshman
Hannah Johnson went 3-for-5, including a two-run single in the fourth inning of Game 2. Freshman
Morgan DeFeo had two hits, an RBI and a stolen base.
Junior
Meghan Klee reached base four times, finishing the day 1-for-3 with three walks and two runs scored. Klee walked to lead off SU's four-run fifth inning in Game 1, which featured RBI-singles by Bonawitz and DeFeo and a two-run single by Coy.
Senior
Taryn Wilson and freshman
Tressa Kagarise both threw complete games from the circle to win games for the Raiders. Wilson allowed three runs on four hits in Game 1, walking three and striking out three. Kagarise yielded just one run on six hits, walking three and striking out seven.
