RECAP: Softball Achieves Key Split With West Chester

SU shuts out WCU in Game 1, 2-0, to split doubleheader and season series

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team achieved its second doubleheader split of the season against West Chester on Saturday, as the Raiders won Game 1 of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division twinbill by a 2-0 score before falling 8-0 in Game 2.

Shippensburg (22-18, 7-5 PSAC East), which entered the weekend ranked No. 7 in the Atlantic Region Rankings, notched its second win of the season against West Chester (28-17, 9-5), the region's No. 1-ranked team. It is the second straight year the two teams have split the season series.

SU's Game 1 victory marked just the fourth time in 45 games this season that West Chester has been shut out, including the first time by a conference team. The Golden Rams ripped 10 hits in Game 2, but did benefit from six unearned runs.

Senior Taryn Wilson recorded her first complete-game shutout of the season – it is her first since blanking IUP in last year's PSAC Tournament. Wilson allowed just four hits (all singles), walked four and struck out five for her 12th victory of the season. The SU defense also turned two double plays.

The Raiders scored twice with two outs in the second inning for the lone Game 1 runs. After a lead-off single by freshman Grace Palmieri and a sacrifice bunt by freshman Lacey Hunter, freshman Hannah Johnson singled up the middle to make it 1-0.

A pair of infield singles loaded the bases for freshman Morgan DeFeo, who sent a ball back up the middle to make it 2-0 in SU's favor.

Bonawitz finished Game 1 going 2-for-3 at the plate. In addition to her sacrifice, Hunter single, stole a base, and drew a walk to cap off an 11-pitch at-bat. Freshman Hannah Marsteller hit a double for the game's lone extra-base hit.

Entering the final week of the regular season, Shippensburg sits in second place in the Eastern Division. However, all three of the postseason berths in the division remain up for grabs. SU's next opponent, East Stroudsburg, is currently two games behind the Raiders – but the Warriors swept the first doubleheader between the teams and needs just one more win to claim the season series and a pivotal tiebreaker.

UP NEXT: Friday, 2:30 p.m. vs. East Stroudsburg (DH) (Senior Day).
