SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Redshirt-freshman
Shamar Jenkins landed a national Top 10 mark in the triple jump Wednesday and several sprinters contributed new bests to highlight a banner day for the Shippensburg University men's track & field team at the Fifth Annual Collegiate Invitational held at Seth Grove Stadium.
"We wanted to put on a show and prepared to do well at this meet," head coach
Dave Osanitsch said. "Our guys came through. Our athletes fed off the energy of their team and from competing at home. I am proud of the direction the team took this week, and we are eager to build off this in our next home meet and at the PSAC Championships."
Jenkins nearly reached the 50-foot mark with his stupendous personal best, winning the triple jump competition with a mark beyond 15 meters. His jump of 49 feet, 8 ½ inches ranks 10th on the national leaderboard.
The effort was one of six NCAA provisional qualifiers on the day, as Shippensburg totaled 32 performances that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard.
Here's a breakdown:
SPRINTS/HURDLES
Shippensburg's sprinters and hurdlers were on point.
The day featured many exhilarating races, but none was more exciting than the 200 meters. Coming down the straightaway nearly three-wide were redshirt-freshman
Aaron Arp Jr.,
Chris Craig, and Bucknell's Billy Melchionni – the 2017 Patriot League Championships Male Track Athlete of the meet.
Arp out-leaned Craig by .01 seconds, claiming victory in 21.29 seconds. Both times are NCAA provisional qualifiers. Melchionni finished in 21.68 seconds. Senior
Calvin Dennis took fourth, running 22.27 seconds.
Craig had a pair of duals with teammates on Wednesday. In the 100 meters, he out-leaned freshman
Roland Miles, for a .02-second victory and a time of 10.67 seconds. Junior
Dreux Stamford was third in 10.89 seconds, while Dennis ran 10.98 seconds – a personal best. All four times are season bests.
At 400 meters, sophomore
Austin Padmore finished second in 49.53 seconds, a season best, while sophomore
Austin Howell took third in 49.78 seconds.
In hurdles, redshirt-junior
Charles Bowman posted NCAA-provisional qualifiers in both events – including a new season best of 52.51 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles that ranks 11th in the nation. Bowman completed the 110-meter hurdles in 14.52 seconds.
Senior
Ori Rinaman had an extremely busy day, with more than 1,000 meters of sprinting. Rinaman completed the 110-meter hurdles in a season best of 14.84 seconds, finished second to Bowman in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.82 seconds, ran the 200 meters in 22.83 seconds, and served as the second leg of SU's 4x400-meter relay.
Junior
Conner Oldt improved his season best in the 110-meter hurdles to 15.21 seconds, while freshman
Josh Booth completed the 400-meter hurdles in 55.58 seconds. All six hurdles performances met the league standard.
RELAYS
The 4x100-meter relay team of Dennis, Craig, Stamford and Miles came within less than a tenth of a second of an NCAA-provisional qualifier, running 41.13 seconds. The meet concluded with Booth, Rinaman, Padmore and sophomore
Michael Lingard (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) achieving a win in 3:26.42, as Lingard turned on the jets during his anchor leg to stave off a hard-charging competitor from Bloomsburg.
MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
Senior
Dominic Stroh ran 3,800 meters on the day, highlighted by a win in the 800 meters on a PSAC cut of 1:56.90. Senior
Connor Holm notched his conference qualifier in the 1,500 meters, running 4:04.72, while freshman
Joshua Jackson achieved his PSAC cut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on a victorious time of 10:05.82.
JUMPS
In addition to Jenkins' triple jump, junior
Adam Warehime landed a PR in the long jump of 21 feet, 10 ¾ inches that puts him eighth on the conference leaderboard for the event.
THROWS
Junior
Cam Strohe paced the Raiders in three throwing events. He won the hammer with a throw of 176 feet, placed second in the discus on a top throw of 159 feet, 1 inch, and placed fourth in the shot put with a season best of 48 feet, 7 ¼ inches.
Redshirt-sophomore
Alec Stimson returned to action with a NCAA-provisional qualifier in the javelin, winning the competition with a throw of 193 feet, 1 inch. Stimson's throw is a season best that matches his collegiate best that was achieved two years ago at Richmond's Fred Hardy Invitational.
Three freshmen improved their bests in the discus with PSAC qualifiers.
Pat Maloney was third on a throw of 152 feet, 4 inches, while
Yobani Moreno Estrada was one place behind on a throw of 147 feet, 6 inches.
Josh Herbster improved to 135 feet, 9 inches.
Graduate
Tyler Hewitt threw a lifetime best in the hammer of 162 feet, seven inches – the mark moves him to fifth on the conference leaderboard in the event. Herbster improved his best in the hammer to 156 feet, 6 inches. Junior
Antonio Civetta hit the PSAC standard in both the hammer and the discus.
