RECAP: Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader Against West Liberty

SU posts 5-1 win in Game 2 after a 5-4 walkoff loss in Game 1

The Shippensburg University softball team split a neutral-site doubleheader against West Liberty on Saturday, winning Game 2 by a 5-1 score after dropping the opener in walk-off fashion to the Hilltoppers, 5-4, in games played at Glenville State University.

Shippensburg (5-5) trailed 4-1 in Game 1 as it entered its final at-bat in the top of the seventh, but rallied to tie the score with three runs – including a game-tying, two-out, two-run single by freshman Grace Palmieri. West Liberty (3-9), however, started the bottom of the seventh with a single, which was followed by an error and two passed balls to end the game.

All of the runs in Game 2 came off home runs. Freshman Hannah Marsteller hit two home runs, driving in three runs, and sophomore Courtney Coy slammed a two-run homer. Coy finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate with two extra-base hits and three RBIs. Freshman Morgan DeFeo was also 4-for-7 at the plate.

Freshman Tressa Kagarise improved to 3-0 with the Game 2 win from the circle. Kagarise threw a complete game, striking out seven without walking a batter. Senior Taryn Wilson struck out eight in Game 1.

UP NEXT: Sunday, 12 p.m. at Glenville State (DH).
