The Shippensburg University softball team opened its 2019 season Saturday afternoon and evening at UNC-Pembroke, posting a 10-5 victory over the host Braves before dropping a 2-0 shutout to West Virginia State.

Shippensburg (1-1) totaled 11 hits in its opener before being held to just one hit in the nightcap against West Virginia State (2-0), a squad that defeated Kutztown earlier in the day. The Yellowjackets scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning of the day's final game to up-end the Raiders – the game featured just five combined hits and was played in 1:45.

SU's win over UNC-Pembroke (0-2) was highlighted by an eight-run fourth inning. In that inning, freshman catcher
Hannah Marsteller homered twice in the inning to help the Raiders gain a large lead. Marsteller finished the day with three RBIs.

Micaela Ghanayem led the Raiders with three hits on the day – including the only hit against West Virginia State – and drew a walk to reach base four times overall. Junior

Morgan DeFeo each finished the day with two hits, two RBIs and a walk. Junior
Kayla Bonawitz hit a two-run triple.

Tressa Kagarise was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing four earned runs while scattering nine hits and recording one strikeout. Senior
Taryn Wilson was the hard-luck loser in the nightcap, allowing just one earned run and four hits while striking out five.
