SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team used an 11-point service run in the third set from senior
Megan Forstburg to put a bow on a sweep of visiting Cal U., defeating the Vulcans by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-20 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg (12-3, 4-0 PSAC) held pace with undefeated Shepherd atop the PSAC Southeast Division standings, as both teams emerged victorious in all four matchups against the Southwest Division. The Raiders, the Rams and Gannon (5-0) are the three PSAC teams without a conference loss through the first two weeks of the league schedule.
Senior
Gabriella Johnson and junior
Alana Pergine each had double-digit kills on Saturday. Johnson delivered her second double-double in as many days with 12 kills, 17 digs and a .244 hitting percentage.
Pergine was exceptional on the outside, slamming a season-high 11 kills to just one error, hitting .476 over 21 attempts. She ended both the second and third sets with kills. It is the second time in Pergine's career she has totaled 10 or more kills in a match. Also, Pergine has just four attack errors over her last 51 attempts dating back through the last three matches.
Senior
Samantha Webber crunched eight kills without an error, hitting .400, while senior
Kendall Johnson had nine kills and hit .217. Sophomore
Keri Gearhart snuck in two more kills off the bench.
Junior
Emily Hangen totaled 36 assists and 13 digs while sneaking in three kills of her own without an error. Redshirt-freshman
Syera McCormick added 10 digs.
Forstburg led the Raiders once again with 20 digs. Her 55 digs this weekend give her 1,706 digs for her career – she climbed from fifth place into third place on SU's all-time list, trailing only Missy Pierce (1,902) and Kelsi Hoffman (2,179). Forstburg passed Michelle Doughty (1,683) and Laura Plank (1,669).
One day after combining with Seton Hill for 27 blocks – Shippensburg and Cal U. totaled just four blocks between them on Saturday.
SU hit .238 – its second-best output over the last seven matches – while holding Cal to a .111 output. The Vulcans did serve 11 aces against the Raiders.
Shippensburg now prepares to face the PSAC Northwest Division; the Raiders are on the road next weekend for matchups at Slippery Rock and Clarion before entertaining the rest of the Northwest over Homecoming weekend.
