RECAP: Volleyball Caps Off Long Week With Sweep of Edinboro

SU achieves third win in four matches to remain atop Southeast Division

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University volleyball team concluded a stretch of four matches in six days on Sunday with its third win of the week, sweeping Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Northwest Division opponent Edinboro by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-13 from Heiges Field House.

Shippensburg (17-4, 9-1 PSAC) overcame 11 service errors by hitting .218, blocking eight shots and limiting Edinboro (10-10, 4-5) to a .090 attack percentage. SU did manage seven aces – including three by senior Kendall Johnson.

The closest set was the second, which featured 14 ties and five lead changes. The visitors were looking to even the match and held a 23-21 lead, but three kills by senior Samantha Webber and a timely service ace from freshman Maria Lucas gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead in the match.

SU never trailed in either of the bookend sets, and led by as many as 13 points (20-7) in the third and final frame.

Three Raiders posted double-digit kills. Senior Gabriella Johnson led all players with 13 kills, swinging .206, to complement seven digs and a pair of block assists. Webber had 10 kills, swung .471, and led all players with four block assists. Kendall Johnson had 10 kills, five digs, four blocks and hit .242.

Junior setter Emily Hangen had 28 assists, nine digs, three block assists and an ace. Senior Megan Forstburg led Shippensburg with 21 digs and her passing resulted in three assists. Redshirt-freshman Syera McCormick had eight digs and two assists.

Junior Gianna Sigado had four kills and five digs. Junior Alana Pergine chipped in with three kills without an error, hitting .273.

Senior Faith Loehle and McCormick were also among the Raiders with an ace in the match. Loehle's ace was also well-timed, as it brought the Raiders within one point of the lead (21-20) during their second-set comeback.

Shippensburg's eight-match homestand continues Friday at 7 p.m. against West Chester from Heiges Field House.
