The No. 5-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team posted a 7-0 shutout at Mercyhurst on Saturday, scoring all seven of its goals in the final 20 minutes of play to defeat the Lakers in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Saxon Stadium.
Shippensburg (8-5, 5-2 PSAC) yielded just one shot against Mercyhurst (3-10, 1-5) and out-cornered the Lakers 12-0, with redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Lay achieving her third shutout of the season and making one save.
The match was still scoreless, however, with 3:35 remaining in the third quarter. It was at that point that junior
Jazmin Petrantonio scored her first of four tallies in the match by converting off a restart.
Junior
Emily Stauffer had a tip-in off a wicked reverse from sophomore
Valen Alonso to make it 2-0 in SU's favor entering the fourth quarter.
Petrantonio scored three times in the fourth quarter, including on a penalty stroke with 30 seconds left. Senior
Rosalia Cappadora scored on a rebound just 65 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 3-0, and sophomore
Jenna Sluymer added a late tally.
Shippensburg hosts Seton Hill at 4 p.m. Tuesday from Robb Sports Complex.
