SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 1-ranked Shippensburg University field hockey team took its first loss of the season Wednesday, as the Raiders were defeated by No. 3 East Stroudsburg, 4-0, in a non-conference matchup on a warm and sunny afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Â
Shippensburg (3-1) posted a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners and a 13-12 edge in overall shots, but visiting East Stroudsburg (3-1) achieved an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. The Warriors have now won four of the last seven matchups with the Raiders.
Â
SU utilized two goalkeepers in the match: redshirt-senior
Ally Mooney and redshirt-freshman
Megan Lay. The duo combined for seven saves. Lay made five saves in her collegiate debut in relief of Mooney, and the Raiders also utilized junior defender
Mikayla Cheney as a kicking back for the final 5:04 of the contest.
Â
The Warriors opened the scoring 10 minutes in with a raised shot from Lexi Hartmann that went over Mooney's out-stretched pads. ESU took control by scoring two goals in the final seven minutes of the first half – the first on a tap-tap passing play in the scoring arc, and the second on a loose ball shot high into the top of the net.
Â
Wednesday's game marked the first in 10 days for the Raiders, who last competed on Sept. 9 in Connecticut.
UP NEXT: Saturday, 1 p.m. at Mansfield.
