SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Cole Kropnick scored his fifth goal of the season Tuesday with a highlight-reel bicycle kick that propelled the Shippensburg University men's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Salem on a soggy afternoon at David See Field.
Shippensburg (3-1) and Salem (2-4) engaged in a physical match that featured 54 fouls and eight yellow cards between the two teams. The match had a sluggish pace in the first half but opened up in the second half, as eight of the combined 10 shots-on-goal occurred after the intermission.
Kropnick's goal was the noteworthy moment and the match's lone tally. In the 75th minute, senior
Devlin Mettee had a side throw-in that sailed over two players and into open space in the box. Sensing an opportunity, Kropnick allowed the ball to travel to him and unleashed a bicycle kick into the right upper ninety for the match's decisive strike.
Shippensburg finished with a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks and a 7-3 advantage in shots-on-goal. Salem did have its opportunities, as redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Garret Watson made three pivotal saves to preserve the Raider shutout. Wednesday marks the seventh clean slate of Watson's career.
Salem's Wiktor Stawski made seven saves in the loss for the Tigers.
