QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team got a four-hit shutout from junior
Taryn Wilson and a key two-run extra-base hit from senior
Chloe Collins on Wednesday to defeat IUP, 3-0, in an elimination game at the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Softball Championships from Veterans Park.
Shippensburg (22-18) advances to face West Chester or Gannon at 6 p.m. – the Raiders will get the loser of the matchup between the two teams that takes place at 3 p.m. IUP (20-17) was eliminated with the loss.
SU went nine-up, nine-down to start the game before scoring three runs in the fourth. Senior
Tara Bicko led off the fourth with a single, and then a botched IUP throw on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Kayla Bonawitz put two runners in scoring position with no outs.
Collins then came to the plate and sent a ball into right field for a hit that scored Bicko and Bonawitz. The right fielder tripped as she went to field the ball, and the play ended up as a triple. Sophomore
Meghan Klee then came up and hit a sacrifice fly to score Collins, giving SU a 3-0 lead.
Wilson was strong from the circle all game long, giving up just one extra-base hit to the Crimson Hawks. She walked four and struck out seven in achieving her fifth shutout of the season.
The Raiders managed four hits in the game, with Bicko finishing 2-for-3. Sophomore
Micaela Ghanayem also singled.
