Baseball Sweeps Mansfield in PSAC Eastern Division Doubleheader

SU scores 36 runs on the day; Sims strikes out career high 14 in nightcap

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team swept Mansfield on Friday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on a bright and sunny day from Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (18-17, 8-10 PSAC) took Game 1 over Mansfield (9-22, 3-15) by a score of 20-5 and completed the sweep by beating the Mounties in Game 2, 16-1.

Senior Gabe Mosser and sophomore Zack Sims picked up wins on the mound for SU in the twinbill. Mosser moves to 6-3 on the year while Sims picked up his conference-best seventh win while also striking out a career high 14 batters in the nightcap.

For Sims, the 14 strikeouts are the most by a Raider in a single game since Matt Wright struck out 15 in SU's College World Series victory over Franklin Pierce on May 26, 2008. It is the most strikeouts by a Raider in a seven-inning game since Wright fanned 15 Lock Haven batters 11 years ago to the day – April 20, 2007 at Fairchild Field.

SU's offense scored 36 runs on the day, hitting .437 with 31 hits and 31 RBIs. Senior Dalton Hoiles finished the day 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and six runs scored. Hoiles now has eight home runs, a new career high for the center fielder.

Junior catcher Drew Bene went 4-for-7 at the dish with home runs in both games. Bene drove in six runs and scored three times. The junior backstop now has 13 multi-hit games on the year.

Junior first baseman Tommy Baggett finished 5-for-9 on the day with five RBIs. Freshman Scout Knotts went 4-for-8 on the day with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored.

Seniors Nick Spangler and Grant Hoover both went 3-for-6 on the day. Spangler homered and drove in five runs in Game 1 – notching his first ever five-RBI game. Hoover tripled in Game 2 and tallied two RBIs on the day.

Shippensburg will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it will travel to Mansfield to finish its four-game PSAC Eastern division series.

Game 1

Shippensburg scored 18 runs over the first four innings of play and Mosser held the Mountie bats at bay to secure the 20-5 win. Mosser struck out seven Mansfield hitters in the game to record his sixth win.

Six Raiders had multi-hit games with Bene, Hoiles, Knotts and Spangler all homering in the game. Baggett finished 3-for-4 in the game with three RBIs and one run scored.

Sophomore Jack Jenkens threw 0.2 shutout innings of relief with one strikeout while sophomore Zach Amisano pitched a scoreless seventh inning in the win.

Game 2

Sim was lights out on the mound again for SU, throwing a complete game, scattering four hits while striking out 14. It is the first time the righty has reached double-digit strikeouts in a game in his career.

Bene and Baggett both finished with two hits in the game. Bene hit a three-run home run in the third and finished with four RBIs. Baggett drove two runs in the night cap while also scoring a run.

Junior Ty Painter and freshman Chase Zurawski homered in the Game 2 win. It was Painter's fourth career homer and Zurawski's first career dinger.
