Softball Splits High-Scoring PSAC East Doubleheader at Millersville

SU wins opener 10-0, but drops nightcap 10-1

The Shippensburg University softball squad split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division road doubleheader with Millersville on Friday afternoon with each team winning via the run rule in five innings. SU claimed the opener, 10-0, but dropped Game 2, 10-1.

Shippensburg (17-11, 5-3 PSAC East) played its first road games in 26 days, as the Raiders had played their last eight games at Robb Field leading into Friday's divisional doubleheader at Millersville (15-14, 4-4). SU totaled 12 hits on the day – 10 in Game 1 – including five that went for extra bases.

The opener was all Raiders, as SU scored four runs in the first and three more runs in the second to claim a 7-0 lead. Shippensburg added three more runs in the fifth to win via the run rule.

The nightcap was all Marauders, as MU erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning to claim its decisive 10-1 advantage.

Freshman Courtney Coy was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs in the opener. Senior Chloe Collins was 2-for-3 in the opener with two RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases. Sophomores Micaela Ghanayem and Kendall Geis added RBIs in the opening game.

Overall, sophomore Kayla Bonawitz had a hit in each game including a double and an RBI. Senior Tara Bicko had a double and drew a walk. Eight different Raiders totaled at least one hit in the doubleheader.

From the circle, junior Taryn Wilson started both games. She threw a five-inning shutout in the opener and finished the day with 7.2 innings pitched and six strikeouts. Collins and Coy pitched in relief in Game 2.

Shippensburg is scheduled to travel to Goldey-Beacom on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Lightning.
